Cliffs of Freedom a cinematic first

The history of Greece’s valiant fight for independence from 400 years of enslavement by the Ottoman Turks is not well-known outside the Greek community. That’s all about to change with a brand-new film, called Cliffs of Freedom, co-written by Executive Producer Marianne Metropoulos. It opens on March 1 in select theaters nationwide. It may very well be the first time this subject has been covered in a major motion picture.

Cliffs of Freedom is based on Daughter of Destiny, a historical novel by Marianne Metropoulos.

Bringing history to light

Executive Producer and Co-Writer Marianne Metropoulos wants history to be known. She’s spent the last several years working to get the film produced. She spoke about her ‘passion project’.

“As a proud Greek-American, I wanted to produce a feature film depicting Greece’s fight for freedom after 400 years of occupation by the Ottoman Turks. This pivotal period in Greece’s history is less known to many, and it tells of the Greek’s commitment and perseverance to achieve freedom or choose death rather than to live enslaved.”

This history ignites similar passion in all Greeks, as the valiant fight for independence is still fresh in the psyche of Greeks and has fueled a great sense of pride. And that the history is not well-known, making this a must-see film for all.

From concept to screen

It took several years to develop the script and get it just right. Then it was time to enlist seasoned veterans to put their talent to work to bring the story to the screen. The executive producer spoke about her team and the process.

“After meeting with various producers, I found a producing partner in Casey Cannon, who had the experience, ability, determination. He shared the vision that I had, to bring this story to the screen, as a major motion picture in the classic Hollywood tradition.”

Co-writer and Director Van Ling came aboard as well. With more than 30 years’ experience in the business, including nearly a decade working with legendary filmmaker James Cameron, Marianne felt he was uniquely suited to translate her story into a compelling film.

“I was impressed with Van’s command of storytelling. Along with his visual ideas and his many years of experience in the film industry, I appreciated his enthusiasm for the project and his understanding of how I wanted the story to be portrayed on film. I credit both Casey and Van with bringing my ‘passion project’ to life.”

Synopsis

Set during the Greek War of Independence, which began in 1821 when the Greeks launched a revolution against the Ottoman Empire, Cliffs of Freedom blends ageless themes of hope, love, and sacrifice with a timely narrative about one woman’s struggle to overcome oppression and shape her
own destiny. It’s been called an epic adventure in the tradition of Dr. Zhivago, Braveheart, and The Last of the Mohicans, using history to pose contemporary questions about the meaning of family, the limits of patriotism, the dangers of intolerance — and the price of freedom.

Marianne elaborated.

“The two most important elements of my story are the love and loyalty given to family; to honor their memory even at the cost of one’s own future happiness, and to realize and accept that even historic enemies can bridge religious, cultural, and language differences which separate and drive hatred and war.”

Ultimately, Cliffs of Freedom captures the spirit of Greece during a tumultuous time in its history. An emotional story filled with romance, tragedy, epic battles, and true patriotism, the story is sure to resonate with audiences.

Cast

In addition to the top-notch production team, the film boasts a talented cast, who embodied the great passion and importance of the story, making it at once personal and relatable, as well as entertaining.

The film stars Christopher Plummer, best known for his role as Captain Von Trapp in the 1965 classic, The Sound of Music; and Award-winning Actress of stage and screen, Patti Lupone. The diverse cast includes several actors of Greek descent, including Billy Zane, Simon Kassianides, and Costas Mandylor, plus new talents like Tania Raymonde, Jan Uddin, and Raza Jaffrey.

Director Van Ling spoke about the young actors, and their unique role in bringing the history to light.

“Our younger cast is very active on social media, with many fans among millennials who can relate to the notion of younger generations wanting to stand up against outdated traditions to create a better world.”

Producer Casey Cannon heralded the cast and director.

“Under Van’s direction, the cast brought our passionate, multi-layered characters to life in a way that’s compelling and believable; the women are strong, the men are courageous, and both the heroes and the villains are complex and conflicted.”
